1.) Make sure you are linked to the internet so that you can download the recent Mac operating system that can run on your computer. This may be Mojave macOS, but an elderly Mac may need an elderly version of Mac OS X (we're explaining how to get one here).
2.) Save your Mac with Time Machine or clone your internal hard drive to an external drive using a SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner application. This allows you to access all of your old files, and if you want to restore your Mac, the drive can be re-cloned to the internal drive.

4.) Sign out and deactivate iCloud.

6.) To remove the hard drive, use the Disk Utility. Click on the Tool > Continue. Choose the primary volume and then press Unmount). Quit the disk tool.

7.) Click Reinstall and Continue MacOS or Reinstall. Follow the macOS reinstallation directions.
